Custom Orthotics for Plantar Fasciitis: Are They Helpful?
November 15, 2018
Plantar fasciitis occurs when excessive stress is put on the connective tissue from the heel bone to the ball of the foot. This can cause a sharp or burning pain, typically first thing in the morning and again towards the end of a long day on your feet.
What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?
Age is a significant factor in the cause of plantar fasciitis, especially for those between the ages of 40-70, but also for those who spend a lot of their day on their feet, or those that have an abnormal walking pattern.
Other known causes include:
- Incorrect or low-quality footwear
- Tight Achilles tendon or calf muscles
- An abnormal increase in physical activity
Can Orthotics Help Plantar Fasciitis?
While they are not a cure, orthotics for plantar fasciitis can reduce pain and provide ongoing support. Insoles will minimize the stress on the problem area while standing or walking as they absorb shock and destress the plantar fascia.
Custom orthotics for plantar fasciitis are particularly helpful if your feet have an abnormal inward motion. The best orthotics for heel pain provide arch support to significantly reduce the stress caused by the unnatural movement of the foot.
There are two options for orthotic insoles and [we wish to point out that research has proven that either choice is a viable option for plantar fasciitis]:
- Custom orthotics: These cost more, but sometimes they are the best orthotics for plantar fasciitis as they are moulded to your exact foot shape providing specific support to your personal problem areas, and correcting any inefficiencies your walking style may create.
- Premade orthotics: Are helpful for people with closer to ideal foot mechanics or those not doing too much standing, walking or running.
What is a foot orthotic for plantar fasciitis?
It may seem a bit strange, but custom orthotics are prescribed in a similar way to medication for an illness. The reason for this is the design features of the orthotic which require the correct amount (dosage) of force and pressure redistribution depend on the individual foot.
This is determined based on:
- Movement of the foot
- Materials of the orthotic
- The size and shape of the orthotic
Orthotics must be used for a particular length of time to have an effect, and the right dosage is critical to their success.
How Custom Made Orthotics For Plantar Fasciitis Are Prescribed
The patient’s needs determine the many factors of the orthotic. A detailed examination of the foot and ankle by a podiatrist will determine the amount of movement available at the different joints. They will then make an impression of the foot that the orthotic design features will be based on. If premade orthotics are required, they can be prescribed on the spot.
